Zoomerang
What is Zoomerang?
Zoomerang is a video editing app designed for creating short-form social media content. It provides templates, step-by-step tutorials, effects, and music for making TikTok-, Reels-, and Shorts-style videos. Content can be exported to other platforms or shared within Zoomerang’s own community.
Age rating: 13 years.
Why do kids like it?
- Step-by-step tutorials make editing accessible. Instead of starting from scratch, kids follow guided instructions. It lowers the barrier to entry significantly.
- Trendy templates — kids can produce professional-looking videos without advanced editing knowledge. It gives them a quick sense of accomplishment.
- Learning real editing skills — the app works as a teaching tool. Many kids develop genuine skills in cutting, timing, and effects.
- Professional-looking results — the finished product looks polished, which builds confidence and motivation to create more.
- A creative outlet — kids can experiment with music, transitions, and visual effects in an environment that feels safer than posting directly to TikTok.
What are the real risks?
- In-app community with public sharing. Videos can be shared within Zoomerang’s own community, where they may be viewed by strangers. Not everything created needs to be published.
- Premium subscription costs add up. The free tier is limited, and kids may pressure parents to pay for features they feel they need. Costs can accumulate quickly.
- Content often ends up on other platforms. When a video is exported to TikTok or Instagram, it inherits all the risks associated with those platforms — including comments from strangers and algorithmic distribution.
- Personal information visible in videos. Kids often film themselves at home. Their face, bedroom, school uniform, neighbourhood — all of this may be visible without them realising.
- Comments from strangers. Both within Zoomerang’s community and on the platforms videos are shared to, kids can receive unwanted comments.
Settings to check
- Community sharing: Review whether videos are being shared in Zoomerang’s community or only exported privately to the camera roll. Set the default to private export where possible.
- Subscription and payments: Check whether an active subscription exists. Disable in-app purchases via device settings to avoid unexpected costs.
- Content they create: Review the videos your child produces. Is their face visible? Does the background reveal their room, school, or neighbourhood?
- Connected social accounts: Check whether Zoomerang is linked to TikTok, Instagram, or other accounts. Consider whether direct sharing should be enabled.
How to talk about it
“Where do you share the videos you make in Zoomerang — just on your phone, or do you post them somewhere?”
“Have you noticed what’s visible in the background when you film? Your room, windows, anything that could show where you live?”
“Some of the features cost money. Do you know what’s free and what requires a subscription?”
“If you share to TikTok or Instagram, who can actually see your videos there?”
