PlayStation
What is PlayStation?
PlayStation is Sony’s gaming console (PS5 and PS4) with PlayStation Network (PSN) for online multiplayer, messaging, voice chat, the PlayStation Store for buying games and content, and the ability to stream gameplay. Children can play with friends and strangers online, join communities, and send messages.
Why do kids like it?
- Popular exclusive games — titles only available on PlayStation attract many young gamers.
- Playing with friends — online multiplayer lets them play together with friends after school.
- Social features — messages, group chats, and communities create a sense of belonging.
- VR experiences — PlayStation VR2 offers immersive gaming experiences that fascinate children.
What are the real risks?
- Voice and text chat with strangers. In many online games, your child communicates with unknown players. Language can be harsh, and contact with adults is common.
- Direct messages. Other players can message your child if this is not restricted.
- Real name vs. online ID. Children may reveal their real name without thinking about it.
- In-game purchases. Microtransactions and loot boxes can lead to unexpected spending.
- Access to mature content. PlayStation Store has games rated 18+ that can be downloaded if restrictions are not set up.
- Streaming and broadcasting. Children can broadcast their gameplay live — revealing their face, voice, and surroundings.
- Communities and groups. Open groups may include strangers with unknown intentions.
Settings to check
- Family Management: Create a parent account and add your child’s account as a family member. This gives you control over all settings below.
- Age-rating content restrictions: Set restrictions based on your child’s age so that games and content with higher age ratings are blocked.
- Communication restrictions: Choose “Friends only” or “Nobody” for messages and voice chat to prevent contact with strangers.
- Spending limits: Set a monthly limit on your child’s PSN wallet to control purchases.
- Playtime controls: Set daily time limits and receive notifications when time is used up.
- User-generated content: Restrict access to content created by other users.
- Privacy settings: Control who can see your child’s online status, friends list, and real name.
How to talk about it
- “Who do you play with online? Are they friends you know, or people you met in the game?”
- “Do you use voice chat with people you don’t know? What kind of things do they say?”
- “What’s your online ID — does it contain anything that could tell people who you are or where you live?”
- “Have you joined any communities or groups? Who are the other people there?”
