Zoomerang
What is Zoomerang?
Zoomerang is a video editing app and social community with over 35 million users. It offers templates, step-by-step tutorials, effects, and music for making TikTok-, Reels-, and Shorts-style videos. The app also includes an AI Studio with tools for generating images, videos, music, and face transformations. Users can share content within Zoomerang’s community — which features followers, likes, comments, challenges, leaderboards, and a coin-based virtual economy — or export videos to other platforms. The app uses an in-app currency (coins) that can be purchased with real money, earned through engagement, and even withdrawn as cash under certain conditions.
Age rating: 4+ on the App Store, but creating an account requires 13+ (in the US).
Why do kids like it?
- AI tools make creation feel like magic. Features like Text to Video, Face AI, and Photo AI let kids create polished, professional videos with a few taps. The sense of instant creative power is genuinely appealing.
- 1M+ templates and tutorials lower the barrier. Kids can follow guided steps or choose from templates designed for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts. Finished videos look polished even without editing experience, which builds confidence.
- Social community with visible rewards. Zoomerang’s built-in community (35M+ users) includes leaderboards, challenges, and a gift system. Kids can earn recognition, followers, and gifts—creating tangible feedback they can see and share with friends.
- Virtual economy feels like earning real value. Kids can earn coins through engagement, sell templates, receive them as gifts, and eventually withdraw real cash. The progression system taps into a sense of achievement and ownership.
- Constant stream of trending challenges. New challenges appear regularly, giving kids an ongoing sense of novelty and reasons to keep creating and competing alongside peers.
What are the real risks?
- AI tools process face data and generate content. Features like Face AI, Photo AI, and Look AI use children’s faces to create transformed or entirely new images and videos. The generated content can look realistic and be shared publicly.
- Public community with millions of users. Videos shared in Zoomerang’s community can be viewed, liked, and commented on by anyone using the app. Leaderboards, challenges, and trending rankings encourage frequent public sharing.
- Virtual currency involves real money. Coins can be purchased with real money, received as gifts, and eventually withdrawn as cash — requiring 10,000 coins, 10,000 followers, a government-issued ID, and a selfie for verification.
- Personal information visible in videos. Kids often film themselves at home or outdoors. Faces, bedrooms, school uniforms, and surroundings can reveal identity and location.

How to talk about it
“What kinds of AI tools are you using most — like Face AI, photo effects, or text-to-video — and what do you like making with them?”
“Who gets to see the videos and templates you post, and how do you decide who can comment or like them?”
“Tell me about the coin system. How do coins work, and have you thought about whether you’d ever want to buy or sell them?”
