Xbox
What is Xbox?
Xbox is a gaming console from Microsoft with access to online multiplayer through Xbox network, a large game library via Game Pass, messaging, voice chat, streaming and game clip sharing. It is both a gaming platform and a social network.
Age rating: Varies by game (PEGI 3–18 / ESRB E–AO).
Why do kids like it?
- Playing with friends. Online multiplayer makes it easy to play together, even when they’re not in the same place.
- Huge game library. Game Pass provides access to hundreds of games for a monthly fee.
- Social features. Friends lists, messaging, voice chat and the ability to share game clips make it a social experience.
- Achievements. Children enjoy collecting achievements and comparing with friends.
What are the real risks?
- Communication with strangers in online games. Multiplayer games connect your child with random players who may use inappropriate language or behave in threatening ways. Child accounts auto-restrict messaging to friends only, but verify these settings are active.
- Personal information exposure through profiles and game clips. Default profile settings may show real-time status and game history; game clips can unintentionally capture your child’s gamertag, voice, or background sounds before sharing.
- In-game purchases. Microtransactions are common in many games, and costs can add up quickly if spending limits aren’t set.
- Access to mature content. Children may find ways to play games intended for older audiences if content filters aren’t configured.
- Streaming exposure. Xbox streaming can expose gameplay to a wider audience, potentially revealing your child’s gamertag and voice.
Settings to check
- Xbox Family Settings app: Download the app on your phone. From here you can manage all settings for your child’s account.
- Set up a child account with age-appropriate content limits: Use your child’s real age for automatic restrictions based on game ratings.
- Communication limits: Set to “Friends only” to prevent voice and text chat with strangers.
- Privacy settings: Restrict who can see profile, online presence and game history.
- Purchase controls: Enable “Ask to Buy” so every purchase requires your approval, and add a set amount to your child’s account to limit spending.
- Screen time limits: Set daily time limits for gaming.
- Content filters for games by rating: Block games that exceed your child’s age rating.
How to talk about it
“Who’s on your Xbox friends list? Are they people you know from school, or people you’ve met online?”
“Do you chat with people you don’t know when you’re playing? Has anyone ever said anything uncomfortable?”
“What games do you play online? Are there any games you’re not sure are meant for your age?”
“Have you ever shared anything personal — like your name, school or where you live — with someone in a game?”
